Shopping in Mauritius

  • 3.8.2023

Before we flew to Mauritius, we found out in detail what can and cannot be found in Mauritius in the Facebook group Czechs and Slovaks in Mauritius. People were right that in the big stores you can really find everything for vegans, celiacs or lactose-free food.

Of course, I was most interested in brands and needs for toddlers. Unfortunately, you can't find Kendamil here, however Anežka was eventually satisfied with AptaJunior Premium (in Czech Republic as Nutrilon). By the way, you can also get fruit pouches and children's side dishes here. Pampers Premium diapers are also sold here, so we were extremely satisfied, even though they were only needed for the night. Children's cosmetics here are mainly French (more expensive children's cosmetics can be found in pharmacies, there are no drugstores like dm, Rossmann, etc. in Mauritius). We were satisfied with the Mixa brand, also available in large stores.

Which shopping chains work here?

  • Super U
  • InterMart
  • Jumbo
  • Winner’s
  • Londonway

We mostly went shopping to Super U in Tamarin and Grand Baie (mainly larger weekly purchases). It was better for us to shop there. Intermart seemed to us like Kaufland in Czech Republic. Winner's, Londonway and Jumbo tend to have smaller sales areas and therefore a smaller range of products.

Food prices are generally similar as in Czech Republic. However, for a large purchase here, you will still pay less in total than in Czech Republic. Unless you're buying only expensive items such as alcohol, which is very expensive except for local rums. Furthermore, all dairy products, meat, sausages and imported foods are more expensive (for example, salmon, strawberries, blueberries, peppers, foreign chips, etc.). On the contrary, baguettes and toast bread are very cheap here. So as local fruits and vegetables, rice and sugary drinks. You can also buy Panzani and Barilla pasta here cheaper.

The chapter itself is the markets. We buy local fruit exclusively at stands (by the house, at the market or by the roadside). Always ask about the price in advance. Central Market is located in Port Louis, where you can find everything from fruits and vegetables, to spices, clothes and aquarium fish. Other large markets are, for example, in Curepipe or Quatre Bornes. You can also find fresh fish by the roads, mostly near the port.

You certainly don't need to bring toys, water supplies, sports equipment or art supplies for your little ones here. You can find everything in the malls and there is even a large Decathlon store (another one is being built!) located in the center of the island at Bagatelle Mall. In the north, there is large shopping area La Croisette and in Flic en Flac you can find Cascavelle, or Coeur de Ville in Tamarin.

What is worth bringing here are your medications that you are used to. We are out of meds for the girls and they just don't like the local syrups/drops. However, you can get medicines for everything here and the network of pharmacies is really dense. More in the article on healthcare.

In conclusion, shopping baskets are for 5rs or 10rs👍 and we always bought bottled water for drinking (in promotion you can get it approx. 15rs/1.5 l bottle)!
