La Vallée de Ferney

You can find this wonderful nature reserve in the east of the island away from the big tourist attractions. But you definitely won't regret the trip here. In addition to maintained hiking trails, you will also find an enclosure with turtles, a shelter for kestrels, authentic accommodation, and a little further on, a stylish restaurant with a beautiful view.

However, we were most attracted to tourism (you can also buy a quad bike ride or, for example, a guided tour). We first went to the valley at the beginning of June. Unfortunately it was closed for hunting. The gentleman at the reception let us at least into the beautifully maintained garden. We recommend following social networks, where you can always find up-to-date information.

Our second visit in July was already more successful. We bought tickets at the reception (400 rs/adult) and went on a hike. You can choose from 3 circuits (5 km, 13 km and 20 km). We chose the shortest one. If we were here without the girls, we would do a full-day 20 km trek, because the landscape is really beautiful.

All the routes have the same start: you go through the garden, past the old sugar cane factory and then through the cane fields to the valley. From here, it is a short walk to the enclosure with turtles, which is also the main attraction of the 5km route. You can also enter the turtles through the fence, but watch out for your fingers - they can bite. This is where the routes diverge. We continued along the blue road back to the car. First across the river and then through the valley back to the fields (the part through fields is pretty boring 😁).

Practical info: most of the route is in the sun, so don't forget a hat and sunscreen. The toilets are at the reception. We recommend visiting La Vallée de Ferney in the winter months (which is about June-September in Mauritius). The sun is really hot here. The entire route is suitable for children of all ages and for a stroller (you'll just have to carry it across the river).
