Mahébourg

In the east of the island you will find the oldest colonial monuments of Mauritius, because it was here where the Dutch began to settle the island. Later, the French chose Mahébourg as their main port, only to abandon it in favor of Port Louis during the 19th century. Since then, the town has ceased to flourish.

However, if you happen to be near the airport and want to experience an authentic Mauritian place, definitely visit Mahébourg for a while. Above all, the beautifully restored embankment with a view of the lagoon and Lion Mountain is worth a visit. It is marked by several historical reminders of the famous battle between French and British troops during the Napoleonic Wars. The French won the battle, but in the end they were still unable to defend the island and the British took it under their administration until the declaration of independence in 1968. You can learn more about the history of the settlement of the island in the museum located in a beautiful colonial house.

Our recommendation for lunch: the local restaurant Chez Francois - excellent food at low prices.
